ABC’S Of First Grade

Arrival…..Students need to arrive at school no later than 8:10.

Attendance….Daily attendance is very important to have a successful first grade experience.

Absences…Please call the school office (201 963-9535) as soon as you know your child will be absent.

 

 

Backpacks….Please send a backpack with your child everyday for transporting folders, books, etc to and from school. Backpacks without wheels are preferred.

Birthdays….If your wish to send a birthday treat please notify me a few days prior to your child’s birthday. We are a peanut/tree nut free school. Cupcakes and juice boxes are preferred. Please do not send birthday invitations to school unless there is one for everyone or if it is an all girl/boy party. Children at this age are very sensitive and their feelings are easily hurt if they are not invited to a classmate’s party.

Book Orders…I will be sending home monthly book orders from Scholastic Book Club. If you would like to order, please mark your selections on the order form and send it back with a check or cash for the correct amount, please make your checks payable to “Scholastic Book Club” You may also order online at www.scholastic.com. Our classroom code is GWCGQ.

 

 

Conferences will be held in October and February. If your would like to meet to discuss your child’s progress any other time, please email me or send a note and I will arrange a day and time that is convenient for both of us.

Curriculum….Our first grade curriculum is on our classroom website so you can see what we are learning throughout the year.

 

 

Dismissal for 1st grade will be at 2:45 pm.

 

 

E-mail….My email is [email protected]. This is a wonderful way to contact me. I check my email daily, but sometimes not until the end of the day. I will respond as soon as possible.

 

 

Folders should be checked nightly for important papers or homework that to needs to be completed. Please empty the folder of all corrected work.

 

 

Grades…The students will be graded on assignments and tests this year.

Gym…We will have gym class every Thursday. Please be sure your child wears their gym suit and sneakers to school on this day.

 

Homework will be assigned Monday-Thursday night. The homework that is assigned is meant to reinforce what your child is learning in the classroom. All assignments are written in your child’s homework planner.

Handwriting is important in 1st grade. Students need to form their letters correctly and write neatly.

 

 

Illnesses…If your child is sick, please keep him/her home. Children must be fever free fro 24 hours before returning to school. Please don’t forget to send in a written excuse on your child’s first day back to school. A doctor’s note will be required for absences of 3 days or more.

Independence is a goal for students because it builds self esteem and self-confidence. 1st graders are very capable of doing many things on their own and I encourage them to do as much as they can for themselves in the classroom. Please work on the following self-help skills at home with your child: zipping, tying, dressing etc.

Lunch …The children may purchase the school lunch or bring their own lunch from home. A monthly lunch menu will be available on the school website. Our class eats lunch at 12:02 – 12:42.

 

 

Money…If you send money into school with your child, please make sure it is in a sealed envelope labeled with your child’s name and what the money is for.

Medicine…If your child requires medicine to be taken at school, it must be taken to the nurse in its original container. She will give you the necessary paperwork to complete. No medication will be given to your child without signed permission.

 

 

Name….Please label all of your child’s belongings with their name.

Notes….Please send a note when there is a change for pick-up at dismissal.

 

Outside time…The children will play outside daily for 20 minutes during lunchtime. (Weather permitting)

 

 

Parties…We will celebrate special holidays with a classroom party and some special treats.

Progress Reports are sent home halfway through each trimester.

 

 

Questions? Question your child every night about what they did in school. Questions for me? Please call, email or send a note.

 

 

Reading nightly for at least 10-15 minutes will help your child become a successful and fluent reader.

Report cards will be sent home 3 times a year. You may keep the copy of the report card but you will need to sign the report card envelope and return it to school.

Rules…I expect your child to make smart choices and follow the classroom rules.

 

 

Supplies…All supplies are kept in the classroom. If your child runs out of something, I will notify you.

Study sheets will be sent home so the children can prepare for their Religion, Science and Social Studies tests.

Snack. We will have snack every morning. Please send in a healthy snack. No glass bottles are permitted.

 

 

Toys…Please do not allow your child to bring toys to school. These can become a distraction in our classroom and are often misplaced or broken.

Tardy…Students who enter school after 8:15 will be considered late.

Test Folder…Test folders will be send home every Monday with tests from the previous week. Please review them with your child, sign and return them in the folder the next day.

 

 

Unique…Each child is unique and no two are ever the same

Uniforms…All students must be in the complete school uniform everyday. Please refer to the Student/Parent Handbook regarding uniforms.

 

 

Vacations….Please try to plan vacations during the scheduled school breaks. Vacation days are unexcused absences. If a trip must be taken, missed work will be sent home upon the child’s return to school.
