Dear Parents and Guardians,

I may have mentioned to you at some point, that during my forty-year career in education I have discovered that there are some things I can always count on.  One of those things is that once Halloween comes and goes the next two months will fly by.  Well, here we are, just five days removed from Christmas and two days away from the start of our Christmas recess.  We have had a busy two months.  We have had an outstanding two months!  Our eighth graders took the Catholic High School Placement exam and are now anxiously awaiting the results and their high school acceptance notifications.  We were thrilled to watch Nirvaan Pal perform in the School of Rock on Broadway, complete a successful Middle States Accreditation visit, cheer at a wonderful Pre-K Thanksgiving Program and give thanks during the Pre-K Thanksgiving Feast.  Students in grades 1-3 went to a play at the Paper Mill Playhouse and just yesterday, our Kindergarteners saw “A Christmas Carol” at the Montclair State University Theater.  We had our amazing Santa Breakfast and Santa Shop.  Last week we celebrated our three Christmas Concerts.   Our student performers did an incredible job and Ms. Campana has once again, knocked it out of the park- not once, but three times! Thank you to everyone who has attended our Christmas concerts.  I know we have a few parents who have seen them all!  Each year I am blown away by the quality of our programs, the talent our students possess and our teachers’ hard work in preparing the children so well.  The concerts were excellent and we truly appreciate your enthusiastic support.

Our Student Council completed the Phone Cards for Troops at Christmas drive and our four officers sent a beautiful letter with a check for over $3,700 to the USO for their “Phone Home Program.”  Thanks to your generous support, just under four hundred of our brave service men and women serving in Afghanistan will be able to speak with their loved ones at home for Christmas.  In addition, our National Junior Honor Society members have concluded their annual toy drive for children in area hospitals.  We will deliver more that twenty large IKEA bags of toys to Hoboken University Medical Center, the pediatric cancer center at Hackensack University Medical Center and the Finding Words Program, also at the Hackensack hospital.  The Finding Words Program supports children who are the victims of abuse.  The folks at all three venues are most appreciative of your generosity and will give the toys we donate to children in their care at Christmas and throughout the year.

As we wind down to Friday’s departure there are some housekeeping items for your information.  By now, thanks to our class parents, you are I’m sure aware that our Poker Night has been canceled.  Some complications have been brought to our attention through the gaming commission in Trenton that we are unfortunately unable to resolve.

There will be a $2 Green and Red Dress Down day on Thursday, the 20th.  That day, in addition to the NJHS toy delivery, our choir will make their way over to the Hoboken Senior Center, to perform for their members.   It will also be the day for all of our class parties.  Thanks to our class parents for their help in putting the parties together.  We will end the week with a half-day on Friday.  There will be no aftercare that day.  School will reopen following the break on January 2nd.  Please be reminded that the Home and School Association meeting originally scheduled for the second has been moved to the following week, January 9th at 7:00PM.

Finally, please know that the teachers, support staff and I truly appreciate how fortunate we are to work with such kind, respectful and amazing children.  We know that your love and guidance make them the wonderful blessings that they are and that your unwavering support for all that we do make Hoboken Catholic Academy the school that it is.  Please accept our thanks and best wishes for a wonderful, merry and joyous Christmas and a blessed and Happy New Year!

Thank you and God bless you all.

Sincerely,
Matthew McGrath
