Grade 2 will again begin their STEM class cycle this week, The topics which will be covered are the water cycle, evaporation, condensation, precipitation, transpiration. and respiration. The students will be able to explain the phases of the water cycle and describe what the water cycle does for the biosphere.
We will be exploring the effects of warming in changing solids to liquids and the effect of this on molecular changes. The students will apply their knowledge of the content material to address a specific task called Evaporation Station. In this task, the students will be required to design a way to keep water from evaporating from a container. They will be asked to hypothesize the outcome based on what design they have created. It should be quite interesting to see what they come up with. The everyday materials which students can choose from to complete the task are aluminum foil, old fabric scraps, paper towels, plastic wrap, newspaper, paper or plastic cups, a washed out milk container, and water. The students must devise steps to prove their hypotheses.
Thus far, we have covered the steps involved with the water cycle. Students have received packets with content background information so they understand the principles when they perform the hands-on task.
The students have viewed age-appropriate videos to further explain this. They have completed a diagram for these principles.
