Dear Parents and Guardians,

The 2018-2019 school year is off to a great start.  Our K-8 Back to School Night is in the books and our Pre-K program will take place tonight. Our eighth grade parents met and have begun to navigate the high school application process. They learned about the Washington DC class trip and will now begin the wonderful yearlong oddessy of their child’s final year at HCA. Thanks to everyone for their participation in the important partnership between home and school.  The teachers and I appreciate your caring, your enthusiasm, and your support.

On Saturday, September 22nd, members of our amazing Home and School Association, led by event chair, Jenn Araneo, hosted the annual Kids’ Village in conjunction with the Ss Peter and Paul Oktoberfest. The beautiful day was made more special by the smiles on the faces of the children who took part.  The dunk tank was a huge hit thanks to HCA dads, Mr. Alvez, Mr. Questel, Mr. Ujhley and Mr. Stone, as well as SsPP Pastor, Msgr. Mike Andreano, and parishioners Don Meyer and Walt Frasier.  They worked the crowd and made everyone smile each time they splashed into the chilly water.

The candidates for the student council offices of president, vice president, secretary and treasurer made their campaign speeches to the voters on Thursday, September 20thand did an excellent job in presenting their respective platforms. Students voted the next day and I ask you to join me in congratulating President Ben Bevington, Vice President, Alex Griesbauer, Secretary, Alice Altomare and Treasurer, Vito Zarillo. Our student council officers will lead the class reps, elected yesterday and work with Ms. Fusiak and myself to continue to move our school forward.

Another election took place last week and I am pleased to announce that the members of the National Junior Honor Society elected Wyatt Flett president, Adam Misyak, vice president, Tess Feremans, secretary and Louie De Falco, treasurer. They will lead the NJHS in their service projects and other activities and work with Mrs. Bernardo and Mrs. Norcia to make our NJHS chapter the best it can be.

The 11thannual HCA Golf Outing will take place on October 15th at the Forest Hill Field Club in Bloomfield, NJ. Thanks to the Golf Outing co-chairs, John Araneo and Todd Kauffmann and all of the members of the Golf Outing Committee, this year’s event is shaping up to be our best one yet! It is not to late to sign up to play, sponsor or volunteer in some way. Information and registration materials are on the HCA website.

On Friday, teachers and administrators from all of the Newark Archdiocesan schools will gather at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark for the annual faculty and staff mass.  The mass will not only provide a blessing for the new school year, but will provide an opportunity to recognize teachers for their years of service. It is my honor to inform you that six HCA teachers will be recognized for reaching significant milestones of service in their Archdiocesan teaching careers.  Mr. John Taormina, Mrs. Angela Bernardo and Ms. Renata Koziol will be recognized for twenty years of service. Mrs. Eileen Foley will be recognized for twenty-five years and Ms. Peggy Girovasi and Ms. Laurie Campana will be recognized for thirty years of service. We are indeed blessed that these dedicated educators lovingly practice their craft each day at our school. Please join me in thanking and congratulating these wonderful educators for their dedication to Catholic education and their service to our school.

On Thursday, October 4th, students from Pre-K through grade three will gather in the gym following morning announcements with pictures of their pets and or a stuffed animal for the blessing of the animals.  Fr. Alex Santora, Pastor of OLG and St. Josephs parishes will be on hand to speak with the children about St. Francis and provide his blessing. Students in grades 4-8 will attend mass at St. Francis Church at 10:00AM to celebrate the Feast of St. Francis. Parents are welcome to attend the mass.

We will take part in the annual Hoboken Family Alliance All Schools Open House at Hoboken HS on Tuesday, October 9thfrom 5:00-8:00PM.  We will host our own Open Houses on Friday, October 26thand Saturday, October 27throm 10:00AM to 12:00PM on both days. If you know of any parent who is interested in securing a spot for their child in 2019-2020 school year, please encourage them to join us on those days. We will begin the re-registration process for current students on Thursday, November 1st.  Parents are reminded that if they do not re-register their child during the month-long re-registration period they will loose their child’s placement for the 2019-2020 school year. This point cannot be emphasized more adamantly. There will be no exceptions to this rule.

Finally, October is a month in which we offer special devotion to the Blessed Mother.  Students will pray the Rosary in school and we will hold a Living Rosary Ceremony at St. Ann Church at 1:30 on Wednesday, October 10th. Parents are invited to attend. Please join us that afternoon if you are able.

As always, thank you for sharing your beautiful children with us and for all that you do to support our school.

God bless you and your families.

Sincerely,
Matthew McGrath
Principal
